Understanding and Preventing Muscle-Related Setbacks

Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or a weekend warrior, muscular injuries are an all-too-common part of an active lifestyle. These injuries can range from mild strains to more serious tears and often occur due to overuse, poor technique, or sudden, forceful movements.

Here are the most common muscular sports injuries to watch out for:

1. Muscle Strains

One of the most frequent injuries, a muscle strain occurs when fibres are overstretched or torn. Commonly affected areas include the hamstrings, quadriceps, calves, and lower back. Strains are graded from mild (Grade I) to severe (Grade III), and symptoms include pain, swelling, and reduced mobility.

2. Muscle Tears

A muscle tear is a more serious form of strain, often resulting from high-intensity activity or inadequate warm-up. These injuries may require extended rest, physiotherapy, or even surgery in severe cases.

3. Muscle Contusions (Bruises)

Caused by direct impact, contusions result in localised bleeding within the muscle. They’re common in contact sports like rugby or football and can cause significant pain, swelling, and stiffness.

4. Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS)

While not an “injury” in the traditional sense, DOMS can feel like one. It usually sets in 24–72 hours after intense or unfamiliar exercise. Though temporary, it’s a sign that muscles are repairing and adapting.
